How to Improve Your Golf Game

It’s May ’21 and finally the Covid-19 restrictions in Ireland are beginning to ease, which means that many of our clients are enjoying long-awaited return to the golf course. However, after a 5-month break away from the fairways, some patients are expressing concern about decreased strength and fitness, and their potential for injury.

Here at Mid West Physiotherapy, our physiotherapists can develop tailored strength and conditioning programmes to help get golfers going again. We love to help players of all ability to improve their mobility and increase their strength and stability.

After an initial assessment which takes into account individual biomechanical strengths and weaknesses, we walk through simple and effective exercises that will help the player become stronger and more stable through different aspects of their strokes.

Helping a golfer with exercises to stabilise the hips and feet, for example, can allow smoother back and chest rotations on the follow-through part of the golf swing. Not only can work on lower limbs or back improve mobility but strength and co-ordination allows the player to feel more connected to each stroke, usually with better outcomes.

In addition, working on the upper limb from the shoulder blade towards the hand can help with improving the contact point when you actually strike the golf ball. Shoulder strength is key for this, and we can help you improve this while also mitigating the risk of injury in the process.

If this is something you would like to get guidance and help with over the coming few weeks, our physiotherapists would be delighted to advise on how they might be able to help you get out and get moving better on the golf course this Summer.
