About Stroke
A stroke happens when the brain is deprived of oxygen, either from a clot in the brain that blocks the blood from getting where it needs to go, or from a bleed in the brain. If you have experienced a stroke you may have been told if it was an ischaemic (a blockage) or haemmorragic (a bleed) stroke. An estimated 30,000 Irish people are living at home with deficits after a stroke. You may experience weakness or paralysis if the stroke affected the part of your brain that controls movement. Muscles may become very stiff or spasm.
How Can We Help?
A physiotherapist will create a treatment plan based on your individual needs and goals. Many people are thankfully able to return home following a stroke, however many still need to continue rehab. Treatments can address strength, mobility, balance. Mid West Physiotherapy also has neuromuscular electrical stimulation devices that can help stimulate muscles that are weak or paralysed following a stroke. Dr. Susan Coote has worked in inpatient and community rehabilitation settings in the USA and Ireland treating patients with stroke.

Depending on the severity of the stroke, research into stroke recovery has shown that physiotherapy rehab can improve physical function, balance, walking and strength (Pollock 2014).
What to Expect
During an assessment a physiotherapist may ask about your medical history, living situation, current abilities, activity level, and goals. Your balance, coordination, sensation, muscle strength and range of motion will be assessed. You can expect a treatment plan tailored to your individuals needs, and you may be given a home exercise programme to complete. We ask that you wear comfortable gym clothes to your physio sessions.
